As a parent or designated care provider to a student, you are understandably concerned about the safety and well-being of your child.
When an act of violence or other tragedy occurs, you may be wondering how you can help. College students will react in different ways, with some seemingly unaffected by the experience, others have delayed reaction and still others having strong, immediate reactions.
Regardless of the student's response, you can support your student with these key steps:
Listen.
The best thing you can do for your student is to listen to them talk about the tragic event. Encourage the student to talk and journal – these are healthy and natural ways for young adults to work through their reactions.
Comfort.
Hold and comfort your student more during this time. They are reaching out to you for security and your love and affection can help. If your physical presence isn’t possible, consider how you can demonstrate this comfort through a video chat or scheduled phone call during a time that doesn’t hold other distractions for either of you.
Reassure.
Remind your student that they are now safe. Point out the steps that you and the university staff members are taking to protect them.
Resist the urge to be over protective.
Fight the temptation to overprotect your child. It’s important that they return to a regular routine as soon as they are able and that you do not discourage their progress toward that normal routine.
Be a good example.
Actions speak louder than words. You can set an example for your student with your own words and actions.
Seek help if your student is suffering severe problems.
If your student has had serious losses, such as the death of a loved one, they may need more help. Encourage your student to see a professional if they are having extreme reactions to the tragic event, such as repeated nightmares, flashbacks, crying spells, behavior problems and panic reactions.
You are not alone.
IU students can contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) 24/7 to speak to a crisis counselor. Call 812-855-5711, option 1, or contact your local hospital emergency department. Students may also opt to call 988 Suicide &Crisis Lifeline, a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.
