Biography
Brent David Miller has held the rank of major since August 2024 as the Director for Investigations and Internal Affairs at IU. In this role, he supervises the investigation division for the IU Police Department across every IU campus; oversees the professional standards division, and is responsible for all internal affairs investigations and administrative reviews. Brent advises the Superintendent for Public Safety on criminal investigations and complaints, leads the Professional Standards division, and reviews all background investigations for new hires.
Brent's extensive career includes significant roles at the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, where he served since March 1998. From May 2020 to August 2024, he managed a 7-person officer squad in the internal affairs division, overseeing investigations of complaints involving policy violations, officer misconduct, and legal violations. Before this, Brent managed a 17-person detective squad from July 2008 to May 2020, overseeing criminal case management for the north district and facilitating reports and presentations on crime statistics. He served briefly as Sergeant of Patrol in 2008, supervising over 40 officers.
Brent began his law enforcement career at Butler University Police Department, serving as a Patrol Officer from July 1995 to March 1998. He patrolled the campus and surrounding neighborhood; worked with students, faculty, and staff; and created the university's non-sworn student cadet program.
Brent holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of North Dakota, awarded in May 1994. He has completed various training programs, including the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, Indianapolis Police Department Academy, Public Agency Training Council, Southern Police Institute, and Association of Title IX Administrators.
Brent has also delivered professional presentations on district detective responsibilities, internal affairs, special investigations unit roles, and media training during officer-involved shootings.
